A Bold New Approach to Wellness and Nutrition
Meet Anu Kaur, MS, RDN, RYT-500
Anu Kaur is a nutritionist, wellness coach, yoga teacher, speaker, and writer in Northern Virginia. An expert in integrative medical nutrition therapy, she established A Nu Healthy You in 2005 to combine traditional dietetics with a more holistic healing approach.
Anu understands that nourishing the body means also healing the mind and spirit. When coaching her clients, she draws on psychology, biology, nutrition science, spirituality, yoga, Ayurveda, culinary and lifestyle medicine, and mindfulness practices that work together to nurture and integrate the whole you.
Her own experience with cancer and her holistic perspective inspires Anu’s work with cancer survivors. In collaboration with yoga teacher Maryam Ovissi, Anu created the Befriending Cancer program to support cancer survivors through yoga and nutrition. Befriending Cancer workshops helps survivors learn how to rebuild their bodies and recover spiritually and emotionally.
My cancer journey
Life has a way of surprising us and also deepening our perspectives. My personal experience with cancer has certainly helped me do so.
I’m a survivor of a malignant ovarian tumor. My dear mother-in-law passed away suddenly from gallbladder cancer. And my dear friend was diagnosed with colon cancer and passed away within a year as the cancer metastasized to her liver and brain.
I wished that there had been more support for her and her caregivers. Yoga and nutrition have provided essential support in my own recovery and I am both humbled and inspired to bring that approach to help each of you and to offer you the support my sister and those around her needed.
How yoga supports recovery
I first started practicing Kundalini yoga in 2007. Soon after, I began to wonder how it could influence my work with clients.
As a clinician, I was curious about the psychosomatic changes that I noticed in my mind and body after yoga class. The breath and meditation practices I was learning were clearly making a real difference in my daily experience. I began studying the evidence-based science that was emerging around mind-body modalities.
The result? I now incorporate yoga and other mind-body-spirit healing approaches into my clinical practice and see the transformative difference it makes in my clients’ lives.
An author, researcher, educator, and consultant at the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Anu has served as the Mind-Body Chair for the Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine Practice Group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and an AND Diversity Leader.
Anu lives with her family outside Washington, DC. She enjoys gardening, writing, jogging, and cultivating a mind-body connection through yoga and meditation. Most importantly, she thrives as a part of a community.
She is passionate about guiding her clients onto a pathway to wellness and looks forward to welcoming you to her practice.
